Aim: This study examines the psychometric measurement instruments used in postgraduate theses completed in the field of recreation between 2015 and 2025.
Methods: Designed as a qualitative inquiry, the study employed document analysis for data collection and subjected the extracted information to content analysis. Using the advanced search function of the National Thesis Center database, 147 postgraduate theses published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved by searching “recreation” in the thesis title field and “sport” in the subject field. The psychometric instruments reported in the methods sections were identified, and the associated authorship and frequency distributions were analyzed using SPSS 23.
Results: Across studies that employed more than one instrument, a total of 273 measurement tools were identified, comprising quantitative (f=201, 73.6%) and qualitative (f=72, 26.4%) designs. The most frequently used instrument was the Recreation Benefit Scale (f=8, 4%). This was followed by the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (f=5, 2.5%) and the Recreation Awareness Scale (f=5, 2.5%). Instruments developed or adapted by Karaküçük and Gürbüz appeared in 24 different theses, accounting for 17.4% of the sample.
Conclusion: The results indicate that instrument use in Turkish postgraduate recreation research is concentrated around a limited set of authors, suggesting a clustering of scale development and adoption within specific academic hubs in terms of both diversity and sustainability.
