Examining the Levels of Football Fanaticism of University Students

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to determine the fanatic levels of football fans at universities according to some variables.

Methods: The study group consists of 228 university students, 48 ​​female and 180 male, studying at Dicle University in the 2022-2023 academic year. In order to collect data; “Football Fan Fanaticism Scale” developed by Taşmektepligil et al., (2015) was used. The data of the study were tested using SPSS 22.0 package program. T-test and One Way ANOVA tests were used.

Results: According to the variables examined for the university students participating in the study, significant differences were reached in all sub-dimensions of the Football Fan Fanaticism Scale and the overall scale (p<0.05). It was determined that female students had higher football fan fanaticism levels than male students, university students who did not use licensed products had higher football fan fanaticism levels than university students who used licensed products, university students who supported Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and other teams had higher football fan fanaticism levels than university students who supported Beşiktaş, and university students who followed the matches of the teams they supported from cafes and radios had higher football fan fanaticism levels than university students who followed them on television and the internet.

Conclusion: It was determined that the football fan fanaticism levels of university students were at a moderate level according to the Football Fan Fanaticism Scale. In addition, significant differences were determined according to the variables of gender, using the licensed product of the team supported, the team supported and the place where the matches of the team supported were followed.
